Channel tunnel. First Channel Tunnel proposal, suggested by French engineer Albert Malthieu- Favier in 1802. The tunnel was designed to be a road which connected France and Great Britain beneath the English Channel. The tunnel had chimneys at regular intervals to provide air for travellers. The design was submitted to the French leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, who approved it; however, construction of the tunnel relied on the agreement of Great Britain. When war resumed between France and Great Britain in 1803, the plans were abandoned. There were several more unsuccessful attempts to build a Channel Tunnel until one was finally opened in 1994.
