Flows in the Sun. Cutaway artwork of the Sun, showing the flow of material between the equator & the poles, based on data from the Solar Helio- spheric Observatory (SOHO) satellite. The image is colour-coded to represent rotation speed, from red (fast) to dark blue (slow). The equator-polar flow is shown as black lines. This flow appears as it would to an observer at 30 degrees latitude on the Sun's surface. Material at the equator appears to move to the right because it is rotating faster, & vice versa at the poles. Material flows from the equator to the poles on the surface, & is thought to flow the other way in the interior. Data taken by SOHO's Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI).
