During the last years of his life the health of Capt. Towers Townsend failed, and forsome years he did not follow the sea. On his last voyage home he was stricken with feverand died soon after his arrival in Brooklyn, September 16, 1887, aged 61 years. His mother, Jemima Townsend, was a woman of many sterling qualities, who had thefull possession of all her faculties till her life went out, February 18, 1894, at the ripe ageof ninety-one years. All the descendants of Daniel Townsend number seventy-eight: Thirteen children;thirty-six grandchildren, and twenty-nine Bloorapbical llntrobuction. IX these hundred and more sketches of individuals and famihes will be foundinteresting- and important facts for those who may care what the past hasbeen, thereby the better to judge what the future may have in store for thiscity and county. The life work of sincere and generous souls of our earlierhistory are here referred to and a fair and concise presentation made of leadingspirits of the present day, who have useful years and honorable careers beforethem for their fellow citizens.
