This invention is also claimed for LaurentiusKoster, of Haarlem, but the preponderance of evidence is against his will briefly mention the few incidents which have come down to us inthe lives of these men to whom their posterity is so much indebted. JOHN GUTTEMBERG, or Geinsfleich, the reputed inventor of printing, wasborn at Mentz, in Germany, of noble and wealthy parents, about the year 1400In 1424, he took up his residence at Strasburgh, as a merchant; but from adeed of accommodation between himself and the nobles and burghers ofMentz, in 1430, it is evident that he returned to his native place. Schoepfliuasserts that he was a wealthy man in that city in 1434. Scriverius informs usthat he resided at Strasburgh, from 1436 to 1444, during which period he
