ThenGeorge ran forward and smashed the skull of- the brute with another bul-let. The brief and brilliant encounter was over, and the party had ex-changed the meat of the walrus for that of the bear. While they were engaged in skinning their prize and preparing it forthe homeward journey, Fred discovered a large bear on the ice not morethan a quarter of a mile away.
