The subject then uppermost in ber mind, judging fromher ravings, was the surgeons knife. She recognized none of thoseabout her. Since her recovery she has stated that everything occur-ring during these months is a blank to her. She was seen by Dr. Bartlett again in November, 1893. By thistime she was taking thirteen grains of morphia daily ; smaller quan-tities failed to give the necessary palliation. Her delirium hadceased, but her mental condition, as shown by her ability to recog-nize faces and voices, and her powers of conversation, were bad. Her Fig. 1. R. hemianopsia had increased. Ophthalmoscopic examination was im-possible because of her refusal to submit to the same. An opera-tion was now strongly urged and readily acceded to by the patientsfamily. The diagnosis was tumor involving the lower portion ofthe left cuneus. The delirium during the summer and earlyautumn was attributed to meningitis. Adhesions of the growth tothe meninges and to the surrounding structures were confidentlyexpected. The operation was performed December 13, 1893, in the privateoperating-room of the Hahnemann Hospital. Dr. Van Lennep wasassisted by Drs. Northrop and Wilbur.
