Napoleon III's warship under construction, 19th-century artwork. At the bow is a naval ram, the Imperial Eagle of the House of Bonaparte, and a protective eye symbol. The ship has ornate gilding, a high prow, and a double bank of oarlocks. Napoleon III (1808-1873, also known as Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte) was the nephew of Napoleon I. He was the first President of the Second French Republic (1848-1852) and was Emperor of the French during the Second French Empire (1852-1870). Both he and Napoleon I made several ceremonial trips during their reigns in ornate imperial barges. This woodcut dates from around 1880.
