The painting was executed by Ehrenstrahl during his stay at Wrangels residence in Wolgast. This is one of the earliest equestrian portraits painted in this composition with a non-royal person, and we know from Wrangels correspondence with Ehrenstrahl at the time that he was so pleased with the result that he had Jeremias Falck make an engraving in 1655. The sword and pistols worn by Wrangel on the portrait are still in the Wrangel armoury at Skokloster Castle today.
