A man dressed as a templario during a Catholic military order of the Templarios (Knights Templar) was founded by French nobleman Hugh de Payens in Jerusalem around 1119. Templar knights in their distinctive white mantles with an eight-pointed blood-red cross, protected Christian pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land against attack from brigands and Saracen pirates. They were among the most skilled fighting units of the Crusades. It was active until 1312 when it was suppressed by Pope Clement V.
