( cm), Remembered as the Father of the US Navy, John Paul Jones served as a Captain and Commodore of the Continental Navy during the Revolutionary War. Part of the congressionally commissioned Comitas Americana series of medals commemorating significant victories of the Revolutionary War, this medal celebrates Jones's signature victory over the HMS Serapis off the coast of Scotland in 1779. More significantly, this was the first naval medal ever authorized by Congress

More significantly, this was the first naval medal ever authorized by Congress and the only naval representation in the Comitia Americana series. This specimen is a US Mint restrike of the medal, issued during the 1860s and identified by the erasure of French medalist Augustin Dupre's signature on the bust.
