A 17th century portrait of Hugh O'Neill, (1550-1616) Earl of Tyrone, whose career was played out against the background of the Tudor conquest of Ireland, and he is best known for leading a coalition of Irish clans during the Nine Years' War, against the House of Tudor in Ireland. In September 1607, O'Neill and Hugh Roe O'Donnell, accompanied by their families and retainers, left on a voyage bound for Spain, known as "The Flight of the Earls".

In September 1607, O'Neill and Hugh Roe O'Donnell, accompanied by their families and retainers, left on a voyage bound for Spain, known as "The Flight of the Earls". Following bad weather they took shelter in the Seine estuary and were told by the Spanish to pass the winter in the Spanish Netherlands and not to proceed to Spain itself. Eventually the settled in Rome, where they were welcomed and hospitably entertained by Pope Paul V.
