Heat-loving extremophile archaea. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through the archaea Staphylothermus marinus. This is a hyperthermophilic (very high temperature loving) species. Two round cells are seen cut through, showing the cell wall and cell contents. This extremophile that lives in extreme temperature has an enzyme called STABLE that can function at up to 135 degrees Celsius. S. marinus is found in deep ocean hydrothermal vents, thriving on volcanic sulphur and surviving in water temperatures of up to 98 degrees Celsius. Magnification: x23,000 at 5x7cm size.
