Rosemary leaf. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a rosemary (Romarinus officinalis) leaf. The leaf of this plant has a number of adaptations that help it to minimise water loss through transpiration. It is covered in a thick waxy cuticle (see-through, around edges) and trichomes (hair-like structures) and its blade-shaped leaves are rolled in on themselves to reduce surface area. Also seen is the central vascular bundle (pink) in the leaf's midrib (lower centre). Magnification: x100 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
