The discovery of gold in Colorado in 1858 resulted in a gold rush to the year 1859 is memorable for the number of travelers to Pike's Peak. It is said that a man who reached Denver in early spring of 1859 pulled a handcart, containing their effects, from Leavenworth, Kansas, to Denver, a distance of 600 miles. On route they met team from Texas, laden with flour and other supplies. The man purchased a sack of flour and put it on his hand-cart (pictured here). Once in Denver, there were few supplies and he was offered a corner lot for half of the flour and two more lots for all of it. The man said no, thinking he could get even more. But soon, thousands arrived and supplies were plentiful. The illustration dates to 1887.
