The quotation from Isaiah 2:4 ‘They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more’ is cut into the granite wall. In contrast a small sign below indicates that the are ‘No dogs allowed’ – an inadvertently amusing political statement! Known as the Isaiah Wall, the name ‘Isaiah’ was inserted under the quote in 1975 – this photograph was taken before it was added. It is located in Ralph Bunche Park, a small public park in the Turtle Bay neighbourhood of New York City. It was named in 1979 after Ralph Bunche, the first African-American to win the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1981 the staircase was named the Sharansky Steps in honour of Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky. This image is from an old Kodak colour transparency taken by an amateur photographer. It will look slightly soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1950s photograph.
