He cameto Philadelphia when eleven years old, and was edu-cated in the public schools of that city. At the ageof fifteen he went to sea in the merchant service, andthen, before he was twenty years of age, on August I,1861, entered the naval service as a volunteer, underCommander H. S. Stellwagen, who appointed himsecond-class pilot for the Hatteras Expedition, and whofavorably mentioned him in his report of the captureof Forts Clark and Hatteras. In September, 1861, hewas made acting masters mate, and served thenceforthin various grades through the war, in the North andSouth Atlantic and the West Gulf Squadrons.
