The British Reoccupation of Singapore Japanese prisoners of war prepare for their journey from Singapore to Rempang Island. Up to 110,000 prisoners captured in Malaya were sent to the island as they could not be accommodated elsewhere. Rempang Island is approximately 50 square miles in area and is 25 miles south west of Singapore. The prisoners had to remain on the island until Japan could provide ships for their repatriation. The prisoners were provided with tools to construct accommodation, a road and landing jetty.
