Stretham Old Engine House

Stretham Old Engine is the last survivor in the southern Fenland of over 100 steam-powered pumping stations applied to fen drainage in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is also the largest and most complete example of any of these, and one of the earliest, having been erected in 1831. Stokers Cottage is in the foreground with the V shaped wall of the Scoopwheel House against the side of the Engine Room itself. The chimney is 75 feet high and beyond that the Superintendents House is just visible. The site is Scheduled Ancient Monument. The engine is one of only three surviving. It was built by Butterleys and replaced several windmills.
