Bai marble industry, China. Bai marble carver preparing to carve a design that has been pre-painted on a tombstone. The traditional carving skills are handed down from master to pupil. The Bai people are an ethnic minority population in China, mostly living in the area in and around Dali City and Erhai Lake, in China's south-western Yunnan Province. Dali marble is a highly-prized ornamental stone, and its quarrying, transport and carving is a major industry for the Bai people.
