Simon P. Kase, in 1838, started his foundryin a small shed on Pine street on the presentsite of the First ward school building. .Atfirst this enterprise used horsepower to runthe machinery. In 1839 Mr. Kase formed apartnership with L. Bergstresser and they en-larged the ])lant, putting in a steam products were threshing machines, stovesand mill gearing. In 1844 Mr. Kase built the first mill inthe town for the manufacture of merchantiron. In 1846 he built his rolling mill, wherehe installed the first three-high train of rollsever used in Danville. He operated the millsuntil 1848 and then leased them to David , who failed to make them profitable
