Mass spectroscopy system. Mass spectrometer (far left), autosampler (centre) and computer (right) used in chemical analysis. The autosampler loads samples into the spectrometer. This spectrometer is for inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). The sample is ionised in a plasma and the elements present are identified by their mass. Mass spectroscopy is the use of strong magnetic and electric fields to ionise samples and separate them by mass and charge. This spectrometer is an XSeries 2 ICP-MS from Thermo Scientific.
