Huon pine logs, salvaged from the bed of the Gordon River, await processing at a specialised mill in Strahan, Tasmania

Huon pine, Lagarostrobos franklinii, is a conifer native to the wet temperate southwestern corner of Tasmania, Australia. It is a slow growing, but long-lived tree; the wood is highly prized for its golden yellow colour, fine grain and natural oils that resisted rotting. The timber contains quantities of a natural preserving oil called methyl eugenol which allows it to survive on or under the forest floor for centuries.
