Lord Dundreary retires a few paces distantfrom the rustic seat when Miss Meridith, glancing lan-guidly at his lordship, exclaims: Me lord, will youkindly throw my shawl over my shoulders — there appearsto be a draught here. Sothern, at once complying withher request, advanced with the mincing step that immor-talized him; and with a merry twinkle of the eye, and asignificant glance directed at Mr. Lincoln, responded inthe happy impromptu: You are mistaken, Miss Mary, the draft has already been stopped by order of the Presi-dent ! This sally caused Mr. Lincoln to laugh, as fewexcept himself could laugh, and an outburst of merrimentresounded from all parts of the house. It was Mr. Lin-colns last laugh!
