Illustration from a poster advertising a theatrical production of Uncle Tom's Cabin, 1870. Eliza carries her son across the Ohio river, escaping the slave trader Haley. They are helped to safety in Canada by the 'Underground Railroad'. Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) published her anti-slavery novel in serial form in 1851-1852 and as a book in 1852.
