On perhaps serve to convey to the unlearned reader, for whose amusement(not instruction) these letters are intended, the impression conveyed tomy mind by what I saw, and so help out the picture I am trying to fillin for him. Almanna may be translated maiti; it means literally all mefis;when applied to a road, it would mean the road along which all theworld 54 LETTERS FROM HIGH LATITUDES. [VII. the other hand, in the Almanna Gja, you can easily distinguishon the one face marks and formations exactly corresponding,though at a different level, with those on the face opposite, socleanly were they separated.
