The Italian anatomist and physician Paolo Mascagni (1752- 1815) studied medicine and philosophy at the university of Siena in Tuscany. He concentrated on medical research and his most important work was in the field of the lymphatic system which he published in his Vasorum lymphaticorum. This book is somewhat overshadowed by his Anatomia Universa, a comprehensive illustrated work on anatomy. The large plates depict in life-size sections the anatomical and skeletal structure of the human body together with the abdominal and reproductive organs. He became Professor of Anatomy at both Pisa and Florence Universities.
