Serpentinised dunite. Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of serpentinised dunite, a mantle rock from the peridotite family. During a phase of uplift the dunite has been thrust into the Earth's crust and has partly reacted with water to form the water-rich mineral serpentine. The serpentine (grey) has replaced the olivine (bright colours) along cracks and around grain edges. Magnification: when printed 10 centimetres wide.
