The renowned festival was created in 1974 by the late Prince Rainier III who had a lifelong passion for the circus and wanted to showcase and honor its top performers from around the world. The event continues to the present day and every January presents 25 of the best circus acts in the business.

Ever since Prince Rainier died in 2005, the festival has been under the guidance of his youngest daughter, Princess Stephanie.
