The massive mushroom cloud begins to blast volcanic ash from the violent eruption of the underwater Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano captured by the GOES-West satellite over the South Pacific Ocean January 15, 2022 in the Tonga Islands. The explosion sent an ash plume 100,000 feet into the upper atmosphere and tsunami waves as far as California.
