The larva which is small Phoxoptcris comptana Frol. MONTANA EXPERIMENT STATION. 177 and of a greenish color lives within the rolled or crumpled leavesfeeding from the inside. When abundant, the larvae not only eatparts of the folia*e but cause the remainder to turn brown. Thelarvae are very active and when taken into ones hand quickly wrig-gle out and drop to the ground. There are two broods, one appearing in June and the other inAugust. The larvae feed on the foliage of strawberry, raspberry, blackber-ry and various other Fig. 24. The plum curculio is responsible for most wormy cherries butcherry fruit-fly may appear in the market fruits and if in themarket is liable to escape to growing cherries. The cherry fruitfly as its name indicates is a fly and it is the larva or maggot thatcauses the damage. The work of the grub of the plum curculio isusually apparent from the exterior of the cherry, but in the caseof this maggot the cherries may from the outside appear to be per-fectlv sound. The cherry maggots are very light yellow in color and of theshape and size shown in the small black circle, above, in the accom-panying figure. The body of the fly is black and the head and legs are of a lightyellow color. The
