Study of a full-length nude male figure seen from the front by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). He made a number of drawings of male nudes seen from the front and behind as part of his studies of human anatomy and proportion, in this case to delineate the muscles when relaxed as opposed being in tension as they would be in a battle. During this period Leonardo was making preparatory sketches of scenes for a commissioned work, a mural of the Battle of Anghiari. It is considered that these idealised nudes were not directly intended for this but to provide useful background material.
