Itis the veritable spirit of tlie Renaissance; the spirit that made those fifteenthcentury scholars hunt for manuscripts, and that caused Luther to found his theo-logical teachings on the actual text of the Bible. Here was a cloud of witnessescapable of relating their own experiences as men to men and needing no veil ofpriestly mystery. To those who have followed the movement the rapid increase of so-calledsource-books of history forms a very interesting phenomenon. We have themfor American, English and general medii^ival history, we are promised them for.
