Atlantic salmon eggs. Hand examining a tray of eggs of the Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar. The eggs are 5-7mm long, the female lays 10-30,000 eggs. Salmon are often reared on fish farms in floating cages offshore or in lochs or estuaries. This has had a considerable impact on the world salmon market. Fish farms can lead to environmental and ecological problems, but many farmers believe they provide the answer to the problem of overfishing. In this case the eggs are being used in the Norwegian Gene Bank Programme for Atlantic Salmon, a programme set up to preserve the genetic diversity and characteristics of natural stocks.
