Closure of all barrier gates began at and were totally closed at The gates were slightly raised at to allow for the underspill and were gradually opened at over half an hour. Maintained by the Environment Agency and taking 10 years to construct, it controls flood waters and surge tides from the Thames Estuary to prevent flooding of central London and other areas upstream.
