Barrel-vaulted passage through the Horní or Jemnická brána (Upper or Jemnické gate) at Slavonice in South Bohemia, Czech Republic. The archway is surmounted by the arms, dated 1552, of Viennese citizen Vaclav Österreicher, who transformed an original medieval fortification into a Renaissance building decorated with sgraffito blocks.

Slavonice, South Bohemia, Czechia: barrel-vaulted passage through the Horní or Jemnická brána (Upper or Jemnické gate). Slavonice, a small town lying close to the Austrian border, was founded in the 1100s CE and expanded in the 1300s. It owes its current appearance to the building and rebuilding of many houses in the 1500s, when the town was established as a post stage between Prague and Vienna. One of the most important builders was Leopold Esteraich, whose stonemason mark bearing the initials ‘LE’ can be found on many buildings in the town. When the post road lost its importance and the town was decimated by Swedish troops, the plague and the Thirty Years War, it was as if time stopped. As a result, many houses look just as they did at the time of the Renaissance.
