Subarachnoid haemorrhage. 2D computerized tomography angiogram (CTA) scan of an axial section of the brain of a 47-year-old patient with a subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH). SAH is a rare, life-threatening type of stroke caused by bleeding into the space surrounding the brain (subarachnoid space). They are often caused by a burst blood vessel in the brain (a ruptured brain aneurysm). In this scan, there is an aneurysm (purple, bulge in weakened blood vessel wall) in the right Sylvian (insular) segment of the middle cerebral artery (MCA - its branches are bifurcated into branches that terminate towards the cortex of the brain). The aneurysm has a diameter of approximately 12mm. There is also the presence of diffuse parenchymal hyperdensities, dilation of the temporal horns (impinging on the temporal lobe), and cerebral oedema (excess accumulation of fluid in the intracellular and extracellular spaces of the brain). This is a CT scan under intravenous iodine injection.
