After remaining about six months in that locality,he returned and went with Mr. Harris to Towanda,in Bradford County, where he sought and obtainedemployment with a corps of engineers who were thenengaged in exploring a route for the North BranchCanal beyond Pittston, now the site of the LehighValley Eailroad. He continued in this position forabout five years, and, although a mere stripling,earned an enviable reputation, and one which wouldhave done credit to many others more advanced inthis vocation.
