The New York Central now has a number of gas-electric cars, fourteen of them are equipped with electro-pneumatic control and electrical equipment supplied bythe Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company. 121 122 RAILWAY AND LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING May, 1928 Of these fourteen, eight were built by the J. G. Brill Co.,two by Standard Steel, and one by the InternationalMotor Co. There are a number of differences in theseequipments, but they have in common electro-pneumaticcontrol and engine starting using the main generators asstarting motors operated from 32 volt batteries. The 250 hp. Brill-Westiughouse engines in the Brillcars drive type 176-A generators and YG-6-A traction motors on the single engine cars are West-inghouse type 557-D-8. On the double power plant car. Power Plant of New York Centrals Gas-Electric Car Westinghouse motors type 569-C-4 are used. These areheavier duty motors than the type 557-D-8. Each gen-erator drives two of these motors which are arranged forboth series and parallel operation. In order to fit theengine output to the traction motor characteristics orvice versa, the generator receives its field current fromthe exciter which has a battery field and a differentialfield which carries main generator current. This pre-vents the generator from overloading the engine. Onegenerator is used per engine. On the single power plant Brill Cars the radiators arecooled by a fan driven by a motor connected to the maingenerator. This is a horizontal type motor. On thedouble power plant Brill car vertical type motors areused for the same purpose. The air compressors onthese cars are of standard type and their driving motorsconnect direct
