However, we observed a muralmonument in the nave, the inscription on which wedeemed worth copying, and here it is :— Edwarde LambeSecond sonne of Thomas Lambe of Trimley his days he lived a Batcheler well learnedIn Devyne and Common Lawes. With his CouncellHe helped many yett tooke fees scarse of Dyed the XlXth of November 1617. Lambe is surely rather a quaint name for a lawyer,yet it appears to have been deserved in this XXII A CURIOUS STRUCTURE 413 It is a little singular that though the date of hisdeath is given his age is not. In a corner of the churchyard we discovered acurious structure of oak, with a high-pitched roofof tiles, and we asked a man who was mowing thegrass what it was. That be the bell cage, saidhe, as we aint got no tower for the bells, but theydo very well there. We had never seen anythingof the kind before, and upon going up to it for acloser inspection, through the oak lattice sides wesaw within five big bells hung on strong beams, andsupplied with wheels and ropes ready for one bell we noted the date 1688, as well as aninscription running round it, of which, however, wecould only trace the few words nearest to us, andbetween the words were a series of large silvercoins let into the metal, possibly those current atthe time the bell was cast, but in the dim light itwas difficult to make out minor details.
