The fu-stand principal among these societies is the Grand Army of the RepubHc, towhich several of the other charitable societies are auxiliary, and with whichthey are aflfiliated. The limitations of a single volume force me to confinemy notice to the principal organizations, viz.: — the Grand Army of theRepublic, the Womans ReHef Corps and the Sons of Veterans, branches ofwhich exist in every prominent city and in many towns in every NorthernState. Posts of the Grand Army likewise exist in several of the SouthernStates, the membership being confined entirely to Union soldiers with honor-able discharges from the Army, the Navy, or the Marine Corps.
