Illustration of Catherine the Great (1729-1796), Empress of Russia Catherine II. Catherine II was the most renowned and longest-ruling female leader of Russia, reigning from 9th July 1762 after a coup d'état and the assassination of her husband, Peter III until her death on 17th November 1796.
