Body louse. Light micrograph of the blood- sucking human body louse (Pediculus humanus corporis). At upper centre is the head of the louse, with its two antennae on either side. The three pairs of legs each terminate in a powerful curved claw for gripping. Body lice live and lay eggs on clothing and visit the human body only to feed. They infest people who rarely change their clothes and who have poor hygiene. Lice can transmit diseases such as typhus and relapsing fever. Infestations of lice cause pediculosis, an intense itching rash which may result in bacterial infection. Magnification unknown.
