The brothers Polo, father and uncle of Marco Polo, were merchants from Venice who set out on a trading expedition to the East in 1271. Marco Polo accompanied them and returned home in 1295. This illustration from a miniature painting in the 14th century Livre des Merveilles (Book of Wonders) shows Marco Polo landing in Ormuz (also spelled Hormuz ), an island off of southern Iran. It was an important trading center for the Persian Gulf area.
