Thoatherium, illustration. This extinct prehistoric mammal is an example of a litoptern, ungulates that evolved in South America. Thoatherium lived from to million years ago, during the Early Miocene. It reached a body length of around 70 centimetres, and is thought to have been similar to a gazelle. Its fossils have been found in Argentina.
