MAVEN on Launch Pad


The United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket and NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Space Launch Complex 41 launch pad on November 17, 2013, Cape Canaveral, Florida. The structures surrounding the rocket are lightning protection for the launch complex. 80-foot tall fiberglass masts are at the top of the four towers, connected by one-inch thick grounded wire extending in many directions. MAVEN is the first spacecraft dedicated to exploring and understanding the Martian upper atmosphere.
