Opium smoker, Central Asia, 19th century. Opium is a drug prepared from the opium poppy. The smoker is using a pipe to inhale fumes from opium being heated in a container. The fumes contain the active alkaloids (such as morphine) that give the addict his high. This photograph dates from between 1865 and 1872, and was published in the Turkestan Album, a photographic collection produced by the Russian imperial government. This photograph is from the ethnographical section, which was published in two volumes in 1871 and 1872.
