He entered the NewZealand forces in 1899, and served with them in South Africaduring the beginning of the Boer War. He joined the MiddlesexRegiment as Second Lieutenant in 1900, and was promoted to beLieutenant in 1901, and Captain in 1906. He served all throughthe South African War, receiving the Queens South Africanmedal and five clasps, and the Kings South African medal andtwo clasps, and was mentioned in despatches (see the LondonGazette, 29 July, 1902).. Willoughby, Edward Carlile, the elder, the eldest son ofJanette Ann (Carlile) and Benjamin Edward Willoughby, wasborn on 26 June, 1834, and was educated at Harrow and at OrielCollege, Oxford, where he became in due course. He wascalled to the Bar on 17 November, 1858, at the Inner Temple,and joined the South-Eastern Circuit. He was appointed arevising barrister for Sussex in August, 1885, and died, unmarried,on 29 May, 1886, and was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery.
