COROT satellite in Earth orbit. Cutaway artwork showing the internal structure of the COROT (Convection Rotation et Transits Planetaires) satellite orbiting the Earth. This satellite, developed by the CNES (French space agency) and the European Space Agency, was launched in December 2006 to search for extrasolar planets orbiting other stars. The equipment includes an off-axis afocal telescope (centre), an opaque baffle (right), a dioptric objective (centre), and an array of four CCD detectors (centre). In 2009, the mission was extended for another four years to 2013. As of 2011, it had discovered around 24 planets.
