The Judgment of Midas, 1589. Karel van Mander (1548-1606) is best known as an author, although he was most active as an artist under the influence of Goltzius. His most famous work is the 1604 publication, Het Schilder-boeck (The Book of Painters), a part-theoretical and part-biographical study. In 1583, Van Mander settled in Haarlem, and became closely involved with Goltzius and his circle.
