Theyboth cast equally dense of the Brain.—Thedifficulties encountered in diag-nosing skiagraphically cerebralneoplasms are due to the super-imposition of the shadows of thetumor and the bony vault, thesoftened consistency of the path-ological condition present, thedistance of the shadow from theplate occasioned by the archingcontour of the skull, and theproduction of secondary raysdue to the marked density ofthis particular region. Formerly I employed the photographic plate;more recently I used a board made in two sections that slide upon a base.(Fig. 160.) The boards are hollowed out to conform to the curvature ofthe skull, and may be so adjusted as to widen the concave excavation, andthus accommodate any size of skull. In this cavity is placed a double. Fig. 160.—Authors Head Rest.—F F, flexi-ble photographic film, conforming to the sliape ofthe skull and employed for locating foreign bodies, etc., in the brain. A lead wire is run from the gla-bella to the inion and also over the position of thefissure of Rolando. THE CLINICAL APPLICATIONS. 273 coated gelatine film, aud the patients head is accurately accommodatedto the shape of the cavity. This also insures steadiness of the part, sovery important in this difficult procedure. Localization can be mappedout by placing metallic wires over anatomical landmarks. The use of a compression diaphragm, for preventing the productionof secondary rays, is largely in vogue in Germany, and has lately becomepopular in America, but this is undesirable, as the area skiagraphed istoo small to allow of definite and logical conclusions. The diagnostic value of the X-rays in neoplasms, abscesses, clots, etc., is less
